FAQ
I don't speak Anishinaabemowin. Can I still contribute?
Yes! You can contribute something visual without any language. Or you can submit a visual piece with a small amount of English (for example, a comic or map) and request that the editors translate your words into Anishinaabemowin.
I'm not Anishinaabe. Can I contribute?
We will give all Anishinaabe language contributions full consideration. So if you speak the language, feel free to submit. Photographs of Anishinaabe skaters (taken by anyone) will also be given full consideration.
Will I be paid for my contribution if it is selected?
Yes, for each accepted submission, you will receive a Visa gift card valued at $150 CAD / $100 USD.
When will the first issue come out? How will people access or purchase the mag?
This will be self-published and the publication date is to be determined. We will keep contributors updated on the timeline.
Your call for contributions says no AI. What’s up with that?
For this publication, we are interested in human creativity and Anishinaabe-driven language development, not machine-generated images or language. We are also concerned about the well-documented environmental and potential cognitive impacts of increased reliance on AI.
Who is putting this magazine together?
Asab is an initiative by Ojiibikan and Simon Fraser University. Ojiibikan is a non-profit organization with members from Bkejwanong, Gnoozhekaaning, and Baawiting. Their work focuses on reclaiming Anishinaabe land, language, and culture.
